VietEdra, Hoa Sen University and NILE Explore Collaboration to Strengthen English-Medium Teaching through EMI and CLIL

Building on the Memorandum of Understanding between VietEdra and Hoa Sen University, VietEdra met with the Institute of English and International Education at Hoa Sen University and Norwich Institute for Language Education (NILE), UK, with NILE Director Thom Kiddle joining the discussion online. The meeting focused on potential collaboration around NILE’s English-Medium Instruction (EMI) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) programmes, with the shared aim of strengthening lecturers’ capacity to teach effectively through English.

Strengthening English-medium teaching capacity in higher education

As universities expand English-medium programmes and create more internationally oriented learning environments, developing the capacity of academic staff is becoming increasingly important to ensuring the quality and sustainability of these initiatives.

Effective English-Medium Instruction requires more than English language proficiency. Lecturers also need the pedagogical skills to communicate subject knowledge clearly, facilitate interaction, support students’ academic development, and design appropriate assessment and feedback in an English-medium learning environment.

Similarly, Content and Language Integrated Learning provides an approach to integrating subject learning with language development, enabling students to engage with academic content while developing the language needed to participate more effectively in their studies.

These capabilities are becoming increasingly relevant to higher education institutions in Vietnam as they seek to strengthen English-medium teaching and prepare their academic communities for greater international engagement.

The discussion between VietEdra, Hoa Sen University and NILE explored Hoa Sen University’s faculty development needs, the potential introduction of EMI and CLIL programmes, and the requirements for developing an approach aligned with the University’s academic priorities and institutional context.

The proposed collaboration creates opportunities for lecturers to engage in structured international professional development and strengthen their capacity to teach academic subjects effectively through English. Through EMI and CLIL, lecturers can further develop their teaching practices, support students in engaging with disciplinary knowledge, and help them use English more effectively in academic settings.

For Hoa Sen University, this direction also supports broader efforts to strengthen its English-medium academic environment, enhance the student learning experience, and advance its internationalisation objectives.
